A note on the
perhaps puzzling inclusion of St. Francis in my list of important deities:
I was raised
mildly and mostly pleasantly Catholic. Any unpleasant religious
experiences I had growing up were at the hands of evangelical
protestant Christians, frankly. And though I'm not Catholic, or
Christian, or even a monotheist, I still dig Saint Francis.
This is probably
due in part to Zeffirelli's lovely film about him (Brother
Sun, Sister Moon) and due in part to my beloved
grandfather, who belonged to the Third Order of the Society of Saint
Francis and walked his talk, for real.
